The Typo That’s Quietly Costing You Customers

"Street" here, "St." there. It looks harmless. To a search engine, it looks like two different businesses.

Here’s a business that, on paper, is doing everything right. Website says "14 Bridge Street." Google Business Profile says "14 Bridge St." An old directory listing from three years ago says "Unit 14, Bridge Street." Same business. Same shop. Three slightly different addresses.

A human glances at all three and shrugs, obviously the same place. A search engine doesn’t shrug. It cross-references. And when the details don’t match cleanly, its confidence that these are the same business drops. That’s NAP consistency, Name, Address, Phone, and it’s one of the most boring, most overlooked reasons a business under-performs in local search.

Why a mismatch actually hurts

Local search ranking leans heavily on corroboration: the same facts about your business, repeated consistently across enough independent, trustworthy sources. That’s how ranking actually works. Every inconsistent mention is a small vote of doubt. Enough of them, and a search engine starts hedging on where to rank you, or which listing to treat as canonical.

  • "Street" vs "St." Looks identical to a person, different string to a machine.
  • An old phone number still live on one old directory somewhere.
  • A suite number present on your website but missing on your Google profile.
  • A former business name still attached to your address on a listing you forgot existed.

The five-minute audit

Search your business name in a private browser window. Open every result. Compare the name, address and phone number on each, character by character. Most businesses find at least one mismatch the first time they do this.

Fixing it is unglamorous but fast

Pick one exact, correct format for your name, address and phone number. Use it everywhere: website, Google Business Profile, every directory, every social profile. Not "close enough." Exact.

This is also where a maintained directory listing earns its keep quietly. It’s one more place stating the correct, current version, which is the opposite of the problem. A stale, forgotten listing with an old address is a liability. A maintained one is reinforcement.

Key takeaways

  • Search engines treat inconsistent business details as a trust signal, not a rounding error.
  • The fix is unglamorous: one exact format, used everywhere, no exceptions.
  • A maintained listing reinforces the correct details instead of adding to the noise.
